Growing up in a small town of Hammanskraal George faced a lot of challenges and a lot of them had to do with the lack of technological advancements of the small town as compared to the bigger Cities. George then got a Scholarship to go and study in Johannesburg that is where He lived and eventually found Zool. Zool platform is a South African hyperlocal online marketplace that matches people who need a quick task done with the people nearby who can do the task. Instead of long-term contracts or formal hiring, Zool users simply post a job and someone in their area responds. Zool currently operates within a 15km radius, keeping jobs local and affordable rather than requiring an expensive trip across the city.

The founder had stated that the Zool app is not a marketplace for selling second-hand goods, not a platform for advertising ongoing professional services (e.g., a carpenter or electrian promoting their business). not a job board for full-time or long-term employment. It exists strictly for once-off, immediate tasks even so he had stated that in the future they might incorporate other services, but as the app is still new in the marketplace there is still no telling as it is still too early to predict.

What Problem Does Zool Solve ?

The app tackles two underlying issues at once which are unemployment and the lack of fast, reliable local help.

• Many people have real skills and physical capability but are currently unemployed
• Busy professionals, elderly people, and single parents often need small jobs done quickly without the burden of contracts, CVs, interviews and screening tests that can be time consuming
• Zool removes this problem by letting neighbours find and assist each other directly

The idea was inspired by real moments in Baloi’s own life — helping a newly arrived elderly neighbour unpack, or assisting another neighbour for a small fee — which made him realise thousands of people are in similar situations but lack a simple way to connect.

Zool’s Structured Fees

Unlike many gig platforms that charge a percentage, Zool uses a flat transaction fee model:

• Minimum job amount: R50
• Flat fee per transaction: R49
• Example: a R50 job effectively costs the poster around R100 total

This model was chosen because most current job postings are small (around R200), and a percentage-based fee wouldn’t generate sustainable revenue at that scale. Baloyi noted that future partnerships with local stores and businesses may introduce different pricing agreements as the platform grows.

• Use your details to sign up, the app will need details such as your surname, your name and ID number for verification
• You must wait to get verified before you can get full access to the app
